Five Sentence Spelling Story

Once upon a time there was a man who got caught in a whirlwind. When the whirlwind stopped the man found he was lost so he asked a marvellous magic genie near by. Sorry, I mean he asked a marvellous magic genie that was near by for directions. Then there was a long awkward silence, the genie didn't say anything. Finally the man lost his patience and shouted at the genie, the genie just opened one eye and POOF the man disappeared in a puff of smoke.

Catastrophic Currants!

Today we did an experiment where we added bicarbonate of soda to white vinegar, and then added a small handful of currants.  We could see the currants being taken to the surface with the bubbles and then float back down again once the bubbles burst!  We wondered what gas those bubbles were?  How did the bicarbonate of soda change? What would that chemical equation look like?  Watch this space as we unravel the answers!

Rocket!

Rocket!

Today in maths we learnt how to play the game Rocket with decimals to two decimal places!  There were 3 rolls of the dice, and after each roll you had to decide where you were going to put that number.  Should it go in the ones column, the tenths or the hundredths?  It wasn't that simple, as we also had to have all our numbers in ascending order as well.  Congratulations to Connor who was a provisional winner, and then Rhys who had the ultimate win - where you have to jump up and shout BLAST OFF!

Gina's Medals and Ribbons from Nationals

I am a swimmer so in the weekend  I went up to Auckland for Nationals.
I got five medals three of them are bronze and two of them are silver. I also got seven ribbons from out of eight races.
I got some Waikato records one was for 200m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke.
It was so much fun!

                            Journey
I hear the rumble of vehicles passing by.  I can smell the nectar from the flowers beside me.  I can taste the fresh morning air.  I can feel the breeze dancing around me in a warm welcome.  I can hear the bus pull up.  I can smell the petrol.  I can taste a change in the air.  I can fell my feet placing themselves on the step onto the bus.  My journey begins.

by Zoe

UpdateToday we listened to Zoe's writing.  We had blindfolds on so that we really concentrated on her words and we could really appreciate the senses that she had used to make her 'moment in time' writing have impact.  These are some photos of us in 'listening' mode!

Bullying
Bullying happens all around the world and it needs to be stopped.  Bullying isn't just physical but it also can be done mentally and over the computer.  Computer bullying is called cyber bullying when people write really hurtful words over the internet and that can really get to someone.  Physical bullying is when someone is beat up all the time.  And mental bullying is when everything builds up over the bullying years and it effects you because you know you can't go on because you have been bullied so much.

These are some of the ways to get over bullying.  One, talk to someone and let them help you.  Two, stand up for yourself and prove to everyone that ever said anything about you, wrong.  Three, think better of yourself and don't let anyone hurt or bully you.  Use these steps and you will be happier.  Don't let your bullying get too severe, otherwise there will be no way to stop it.

Remember, you are not alone so think of the others around the world.  Maybe you could create a 'stop bullying' group with people that have been bullied before.

Thanks.

Chemistry Fabtastico

"H20 - 2 hydrogens and 1 Oxygen = a substance of water, C02 - 1 carbon and 2 oxygens = Carbon Dioxide - type of air" I muttered under my breath as I listened to Mrs Hopkins as she wrote confusing scribbly signs on the whiteboard.

Now Mrs Hopkins says "Okay, everybody got that".  Everybody nods their heads.  "Good, please get into a big porowhita". The class scuttles like frightened crabs into a circle.

Mrs Hopkins passes round hand sanitiser to "kill the germs because we will be handling food" and then she passes round plates.  Then we go to our desks and wait.  Next she gathers a group of helpers to pass round the lollies to make our H20.

Me and Emalee sit together to help each other.  I choose two pink marshmallows for my Hydrogens.
For my Oxygen I choose one peach sour lolly.  First I put a pink marshmallow on either side of a toothpick.  Next I stick one toothpick in one of the marshmallows and then I do the same to the other marshmallow with another toothpick to form a triangle shape.  Now I stick my peach sour on top of the two toothpicks.  WAHOOO!!!!!! I have One H20!!

Now I am going to make one C02.  I collect 2 Berries and Cream lollies for my Oxygens and a white marshmallow for my Carbon.  Firstly I Stick my 2 Berries and Cream lollies on the sharp sides of a tooth- pick.  Then I stick a toothpick in each Berries and Cream lolly.  On the top goes the white marshmallow.  NOW I HAVE MADE MY CARBON DIOXIDE!!!!!!!

I get them glad-wrapped and then put them in my bag to eat later.
I sit on the mat and the class listens to a man on youtube singing the whole Peroidic Table.
WOW!!!!!!

Mount Tarawera Mind map

                                                        My Mount Tarawera Mind map!

My mind map shows some words relating to the explosion.

                                                                       Joshua G

Today we learnt how to generate our ideas using mind maps.  We first used the example of our favourite place to be - our own bedroom, under a special tree, a swimming pool....  We then thought of six ideas that related to that place - each idea having its own special coloured branch.  From each of those branches with then thought of ideas that related to the idea in the orginal branch.  And so our Mind Map grew.  We then applied that understanding to create our own mindmap detailing important information about the Tarawera eruption.  This is Joshua's great example.  Mrs H

The Fishing Fight

I was in an intense fight with a big fish on the end of my line. I was about to give up when my popa yelled out" I see it"Popa ran and grabbed the net. I had my first glimpse of the fish. I said."Can we measure it"After we kill it. I yelled "WOHOO "about 10 times. Then we measured it, it was 52 cm's long.Soon after we saw a plane doing back flips .Then we saw a pod of Dolphins grazing along the top of the water. There was about eight or nine of them. After I caught the fish it was like I was going to faint and that my face was white. I was astonished with what I had caught.

     Jelly bean adventure

I stared down at the jelly beans then at the line of people with the watering mouths. Ha ha ha I mumbled to myself as the line slowly moved past I took one for myself and skipped off to join my friends and their jelly beans. We all threw them down smiling
but that didn't last a long time. Izzy's face turned green,
Grace's red and Halle's dreamy. Izzy splattered  to the toilets, Grace tumbling after her
while me and Halle stared in dismay. Then went back to enjoying our jelly beans.
The taste trickled down my throat leaving a sweet taste for my taste buds to enjoy. Moments later
behind.
Moments later Izzy was sprinting to the drinking founten then lazily ploped her self down on the wooden seat ,"what flavour?" asked Halle rotten egg she puffed back EWW I said Izzy scowled back
hey you cant be talking I bet when you hear graces you will be laughing your head off.
