Mount Tarawera

A powerful jolt shook the ground. Mud hit water causing violent explosions. Frightened people staggered through the pitch black darkness. I screamed as another explosion took place. The wind howled. What should I do now? Other children around me started crying as lava spurted into the air. I was petrified. I tried to run to my parents, but I wasn't strong enough. Now I was alone. My heart pounded as I stumbled through the sticky ash. The ground jerked yet again, and smoke rose into the air. The sky lit up as molten lava squirted out of the volcano. A ball of fire landed beside me. I hurridly jumped away as everything around it burst into flame. I heard a shout. It echoed and then faded into the blackness. Was it my parents? Then suddenly, they appeared out of the   smoke, coughing and spluttering. I heaved a sigh of relief. it was them - My parents.

Leaf Colour Reflection by Maia

We have been reading how leaf colour changes and we found that it involves 3 really interesting and different pigments all of which have different jobs, and light that they absorb.
This is Maia's reflection:

Chlorophyll

Lucas has been reading about the role of the pigment Chorophyll. This is his keynote slide showing his understandings about his pigment. Do you have any comments or questions?

Anthocyanin

In our reading groups we have been researching about chlorophyll. caretenoids and anthocyanins. Here is some of the research I have done about anthocyanin. Anthocyanin is a chemical that is often found in flowers or foods and occasionally trees. It's found in blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, blackberries, cherries, eggplant peel, black rice, red cabbage, violet petals and ripe olives. Do you have any comments or questions?

Questions about the endothermic reaction.

(If you know the answer if you could comment them that be great!)

What if you put the endothermic reaction in a fire?

Would this experiment work with other liquids other than water?

If you drank it when the reaction started what would happen, would you get sick?

Is this mixture on the periodic table?

Who and how discovered the endothermic reaction?

Why is this reaction useful?

Do you have comments? Or questions?

Swimming Sports

As my eyes were glued straight ahead, people's voices started to fade when I heard the blocks go clatter, BANG!  My heart started thumping like a drum and my eyes squinted as I looked at the stone solid pool floor.  I heard kids shouting 'lets go bears, lets go,' like a monkey talking.  At the end of the race we finally hopped out.  'What a splash' I sighed.

MOUNTAIN OF FIRE.

                           Mountain of Fire

June 10 1886
A sudden jolt woke me up I looked at my pocket watch wow it was only three o,clock

in the morning I wonder what woke me up?. The ground shook under my feet, so that

was my answer earthquakes. I ran out of the house we were staying in then disaster
struck, mount tarawera erupted spewing ash mud and lava. I looked back at the flaming

wreck of a house that we had ben staying it was sad to see it go up in flames, it had been

my favorite place in the whole village but now it was just a flaming wreck.

all around me I could see people with pillows over their heads I found out why the hard

why the hard way a splash of mud landed on my hand and it hurt just to do a

description of the pain imagine putting your hand in a white hot fire but it was endless

pain. this is where I leave off its to dangerous to write and run from a volcano at the
                      same time.

Mount Tarawera Eruption

 Mount Tarawera Eruption

I was scared, no I was petrified, in fact I was mortified. The end of the world was near. It was raining boulders, the mountain was exploding and turning red hot and also there was a pitch black cloud, heading straight towards me. I ran, not knowing where to go. Someone where I could lie down and go to sleep until this was all over. Unfortunately there was no going to sleep tonight. I ran, I just ran, in the mud, in the ash, I just ran. Trying to get away from this chaotic mess, and that was were I saw him. A young boy about 4 years old. He was playing in the mud like the eruption was nothing but little bit of rain. I ran at him, pulling him forward and gave him a little shove exactly when a giant ball of flame came hurtling down at me, and hit me on the head, and that was the end of Logan John P.

The Mount Tarawera eruption

magnificent red and orange colours glow under the black night sky . There is a huge cannon sound . Boom!!! Rocks as big as people splash into the lake the ground rumbles like a dragon roaring . Lava lights up the side of the Mountain .  Rocks land around me and I swallow ash .  I gasp for air . Pain shocks my face . I hear a bang and then the world turns blac.

Oliver

The fear that was sudden

BOOM!!!! I fell out of bed I woke papa. There was  a magnificent sunset colour in the sky it was as if I was looking at an angel. The light was just a big dome surrounding  what looks to be ...... volcano . I looked around there were people hands up as if theyhad been cuffed by the policemen. At  the side of the volcano there was a big bloom of smoke rising like flares. The rocks were rising like when you grow and when you shrink to your papas size. The burst of light was going into the sky as far as to there that I can see . It was like the water was waiting for the puma to strike because it swayed there so calmly . We fled into the woods and died in peace .

The Eruption Of Mount Tarawera

An earthquake made me fall out of bed I tried to stand up but another one flung me against the wall.A sharp pain ran through my shoulder, it felt like someone was hammering my arm in the same spot, holding my arm I ran outside.I heard a rumble and I looked around suddenly three columns of lava shot into the sky.It was coming from the mountain.Everyone came outside and, when they realised what was happening, started running around screaming.Someone slapped me in the face as I was trying to walk through the carnage.I felt a hand wrap around me, it was Mum.Then a huge rock hit Mr Mcrae's hotel.Mud and lava went flying everywhere.Suddenly I fell to the ground, a huge block of mud had hit me...

                              THE ERUPTION

I glared at the mountain as I was going to sleep when suddenly, RUMBLE,RUMBLE violent earthquakes shook me.Later,BOOM!The  mountain was erupting into flames and ash and when I looked up there was nothing but darkness in the sky.Was this the end I asked myself?

Flying Fox

The wind whips past as i zoom towards the ground. I felt like I was going to fall down, down, down. Birds tweeting as I fall to my doom. Dust slipped into my nose, giving me a unpleasant thought. BONK! I hit the tyres and my journey was over.

Fire in the Sky (the eruption) re-witten by Izzy

Will and I were in the hotel getting ready to have supper. I was dressing up all posh because we were hving dinner with guide Sophia tonight. Suddenly we heared a knock on the door, it was Papa ”A couple more minutes ta supper time!”, he called out. Will and I did the finishing touches and walked down the corridor to where supper was being served. Papa and guide Sophia were waiting for us.I hesitated. I wanted to be as polite as possible in front of guide Sophia but I didnt know where to sit.

Eventually Will stepped foward and led the way to our seats. He pulled out a seat for me and then got one for himself. Once he sat down he picked up his knife and fork and started eating. He had used all the right table manners that Mama had taught me, like posture, holding the knife and fork in the proper hands and all that stuff that I hardly do . When he was done he and guide Sophia started talking. Just quietly I felt a bit jealous when he and guide Sophia talk together . I felt quite left out. He always acts so weird around guide Sophia and I dont know why. Anyhow,  in the middle of their conversation there was a deep rumbling sound. Will told me not to worry about it and then Will continued his conversation with guide Sophia.

After everybody had finished dinner ,Will and I walked quietly back up to my room and hopped into bed. All night I thought about the fantom canoe that I saw nine days ago. I frollicked around trying to get the thought out of my head and eventually I fell asleep. That night I had night mares I dreamed that the people of whatever they where came into my room and murdered Will, and that I was the last one alive out of all of the world. It was HORRIBLE and  in my dream when I was sleeping something jumped out of my wardrobe it sent a shiver down my spine. Just then when the strange figure was moving towards me I was woken up by Will.  “Are you ok”, Will asked. “Y-yes, fine I answered” but I had a horrible dream.  “What happened?”.  “Oh nothing”.  “Your face looked terrified and you were thrashing around”.

Just as will was taking me to the kitchen there was a rumbling sound. I ran outside and looked at Mount Tarawera. Mud and rocks and magma flew out furoiusly. I  screamed and hurried back to Papas dorm.  Papas dorm was destroyed.  I searched everywhere but I could not find Papa.  Suddenly  arms grabbed me.  They were firemen.  I cried for the rest of the night and all around I could hear cries of despair.  I sat down in a corner until Will came to me. He handed me the bible  that he always kept in his pocket. He read out a verse from the bible. We read all day sitting down in a corner. Suddeny I grew strong that there was hope that Papa was still alive.  Just then we were joined by another two people. One was a fireman and one was Papa. “Papa, Papa”, I screamed. I reached up and hugged him. Tears flew down my face. “I’m so glad you are safe. It’s time to be heading back and getting some more sleep”. That night I slept well. The next morning it was time to say goodbye to Will and everybody else. I cried and hugged them until it was time to go. Off we went. Will and I still write to each other about our adventures.
The End.

Piper

I could hear the elevator chime.
I could see the wheels of the hospital bed.
I could taste my grandmas lipstick.
I could feel the slippery hand sanitizer.
I could smell the medicine.
I could hear my dads voice.
I could see my reflection on the polished floor.
I could taste my sweat.
I could feel my quickened breath.
I could smell my mums hair.
I could feel my cheeks burning with pride.

Carnival

Bright bunting is strung between trees and cheerful theme songs blare out of the speakers. The slow, jerky merry-go-round creaks and the feathered parrots squawk in response. Stripy stalls selling toys shudder in the breeze. Many different aromas danced through the air, whispering in all ears," follow me to the delicious donuts, follow me to the icy drinks." The sun glows radiantly down on the eager bodies, pushing and shoving to get where they want. The carnival lures them in to a rainbow of colours and a myriad of sounds. The carnival lets them forget about reality.
